Pista Horror (b. 1984)
Pista Horror (István Máriás) mines video games, pop culture and Hungarian legends for his imagery, creating a mysterious hinterland that correlates with the artist’s adopted name which, he says, evokes ‘a whole range of heroic Hungarian folk outlaws and outsiders.’ His art mixes these elements into richly symbolic, often surreal compositions that are delicately painted onto ceramic squares then fired, suggesting a dystopian alternative to the Zsolnay tiles adorning Budapest’s Szecesszió style buildings.
